Cecil Hawes (Service No 2382) was born in Dubbo in 1897.

At the time of enlistment Cecil was single, 18 years of age and employed as a butcher in Coledale, NSW. He had previously served 3 years with the Army Cadets and Militia.

Cecil embarked on HMAT A67 - Orsova with the 4th Battalion, 7th Reinforcements on 14 July 1915 for Egypt.

After receiving some training in Egypt, he arrived in Gallipoli, Turkey on 4 November 1915. Cecil's unit returned to Egypt before being sent to and arriving in France on 30 March 1916.

1916 and 1917 were spent in and out of hospitals with various illnesses. 1918 saw Cecil return to his unit in France where he was wounded in action on 11 September 1918.

Cecil was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to the chest. He was deemed unfit for further active service and was repatriated to Australia in December 1918. Cecil was medically discharged on 15 April 1919.

In 1923 Cecil married Myrtle King and together they had a child.

Cecil's file contains a letter to him from the Army in 1921 requesting any information he may be able to provide about an exhumed soldier who was found wearing identification discs that contained his number and name. Cecil replied with some information about a missing mate but could not explain the discs as he still had his identification discs.
