Lance Corporal Alfred Fiske (Service No 181) was born in London, England and enlisted in the British Army on 7th April 1902.

Alfred served 8 years full time and 4 years part time in the British Army with the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, 1st Battalion in South Africa, Gibralter and Bermuda. He was discharged from the British Army on 6th April 1914.

At the time of enlistment to the Australian Imperial Force, Alfred was single, 31 years of age, and employed as a Groom in Wollongong, N.S.W.

He embarked on HMAT Afric, A19 with the 1st Infantry Brigade, 1st Battalion, A Company on 18th October 1914 for Egypt arriving in December 1914.

On arrival in Egypt, Alfred was transferred to Headquarters, 1st Battalion as a Signaller.

He landed at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 28th April.

Alfred returned to Egypt after the evacuation of Gallipoli. In January 1916, Alfred was admitted to hospital but discharged later that same month.

Alfred served in Egypt until he embarked for France, arriving on 29th June 1916.

Alfred saw service on the Western Front moving regularly between 1st Battalion and 1st Battalion Headquarters.

Alfred had a number of hospital admissions and was reclassified as unfit for active service in March 1918. He was repatriated to Australia in May 1918 aboard the HMAT Gaika and discharged as medically unfit on 12th August 1918.

After discharge from the AIF, Alfred returned to England where he married Charlotte Veneer and together they had 4 children.

Alfred died in London in 1967.
