Ernest Alfred Haines (Service No 6264) was born in Newcastle, N.S.W.

At enlistment, he was single, 27 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Woonona, N.S.W. Ernest enlisted at Kiama, N.S.W in April, 1916.

He embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides, with 13th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement, on 9th September 1916. Ernest arrived in England on 26th October 1916, and joined 13th Battalion in France, on 2nd January 1917. Shortly after, on 4th February 1917, he was wounded in action. Ernest was sent to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds, to his right eye and nose. He returned to 13th Battalion, on 29th March 1917.

Ernest saw service on the Western Front, at the Battle of Bullecourt, where 13th Battalion suffered heavy losses. On 26th September 1917, the battalion was in Belgium, when Ernest was wounded a second time. He was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of multiple, severe wounds to his arms and legs.

Ernest returned to Australia, in April 1918, and discharged medically unfit on 30th August 1918.

In 1920, he married Elsie Trowle, in Penrith, N.S.W.

Ernest died in 1957, and is buried in Bulli Cemetery, N.S.W.
