John Zinzzerella (Service No 984) was born in the Illawarra district of N.S.W. around 1897.

At enlistment John stated he was 23, single and worked as a labourer.  In fact John was only 17 years of age. 

He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A20 Honorata with H Company, 7th Battalion on 19th October 1914.  The troops arrived in Egypt in December 1914 and after training, John was sent to Gallipoli where he served until he became ill and evacuated in September 1915.  He rejoined his unit in Egypt on 8th January 1916.

In March 1916 he was admitted to hospital with mumps.

John arrived in France on 29th March 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.  On 23rd May 1918 he was evacuated to hospital in England due to serious problems  with his right knee.

John was returned to Australia in November 1918 and discharged on 6th March 1919.

On 17th March 1921 John married Maud Ahern in Echuca where they raised 2 children.

John died in Echuca in 1956.
