John (Jack) T Dungey (Service No 1889) was born c.1893 in Mount Kembla where he grew up. His pre-war life saw him working as a miner. He enlisted in Sydney on 20 March, 1916, seven months after his brother William Dungey. He joined the 34th Infantry Battalion 2 nd reinforcement’s.

During his service, Jack was shot and wounded in action four times. He was also diagnosed with bronchitis. Jack was killed in action on 22 August 1918 at the Battle of Braysur, Somme. He was 25 years of age. He was initially listed as ‘wounded and missing’ which resulted in a court enquiry according to documents listed on the National Australian Archive. An official statement was subsequently released on 5 March 1919 including his official date of death.

Jack Dungey is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial as well as the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour (panel 123).

The purpose of the project was to acknowledge the contributions of Illawarra residents in various wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions from the Boer War to the present day.
