David Tewart Joyce
David Joyce (Service No 3831) was born in Durham, England in July 1894, arriving in Australia after 1911.
At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, working as a miner and living in Corrimal, N.S.W.
David embarked on HMAT A7 Medic, with 2nd Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 30th December 1915.
He arrived in France, on 4th April 1916, joining 2nd Battalion, on 25th May 1916. David saw service, both on the Western Front, and in England.
On 9th April 1917, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, then to Corporal on 12th May 1917, and to Sergeant on 22nd December 1917.
David was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal, for his actions as a Lewis Gunner, attacking the Hindenberg Line on 4th May. He was awarded the Military Medal in July 1917.
David spent time in England and returned to Australia in May 1919. He was discharged on 12th September 1919.
In 1925, he married Elizabeth Henry, in Newcastle, N.S.W. and they had one child.
David died in Newastle, in 1976, age 82.
