Joseph Magnay (Service No 6290) was born in Newcastle, England, and arrived in Australia with his brother John in July 1914.

At enlistment Joseph was single, 18 years old, worked as a butcher and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W. Joseph had served 6 months with the CMF.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with 20th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion, on 9th September 1916 the troops arrived in England on 26th October 1916 and Joseph joined A Company, 13th Battalion in France on 15th February 1917.

Joseph was captured at Reincourt on 11th April 1917 along with many other 13th Battalion men and spent the rest of the war in a POW Camp. He was wounded at the time but recovered.

He was repatriated to England on 7th January 1919 and returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged on 9th July 1919.

In 1921 Joseph married Doris Allen in Wingham, N.S.W. and they had 3 children.  After the war he worked for the Post Office.

Joseph died in 1980 and is buried in Newcastle Memorial Park Cemetery, N.S.W. 

Joseph's brother John also served.
