John Hallinan (Service No 3172) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. in 1872.

On 8th March 1897 he married Rebecca Elliott and she was teaching at Wollongong at the time he enlisted.

When John enlisted he was 42 years old and worked as commercial traveller.  He and Rebecca had 2 children when he embarked from Sydney on HMAT A69 Warialda with 10th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion on 8th October 1915.

He arrived in Egypt and joined 2nd Battalion on 21st January 1916 but was admitted to hospital in Cairo on 30th January 1916 suffering from varicose veins, and the decision was taken to return him to Australia.  He arrived home in April 1916 and was discharged medically unfit on 3rd September 1916.

John was living at the Coolangatta Soldiers' Rest Home in northern N.S.W. when he was taken ill and sent to Murwillumbah Hospital where he died suddenly in 1939.
