Walter Adie (Service No 5282) was born in Fife, Scotland and arrived in Australia in 1912. In 1914 he married Maud Brown in Wollongong, N.S.W.

At enlistment Walter was 26 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Balgownie, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with 16th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, on 1st April 1916.  He saw service in France and his first battle was at Pozieres.

He was wounded in action sometime between 22nd and 25th July 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of shell shock.

Walter was returned to Australia in August 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 29th November 1917.

He returned to the Mount Keira coal mine after the war and died in Wollongong in 1971.

Walter's service is commemorated on the Balgownie Presbyterian Church Honour Roll & the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
