Walter Mobbs (Service No 4243) was born in Sydney, N.S.W.

At enlistment, Walter was single, 23 years of age, lived at Thirroul, N.S.W. and worked as a motor driver.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A60 Aeneas with 13th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, on 20th December 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt and Walter was taken on strength of 2nd Battalion on 14th February 1916.

He arrived in France on 28th March 1916 and served with 2nd Battalion on the Western Front.  

On 22nd July 1916, while fighting at Pozieres, Walter was wounded  and evacuated to England for treatment of gun shot wounds to his foot and buttocks.  While in hospital he met Eliza Wakelin, a nurse who had served in England and France and on 2nd January 1917 Walter & Eliza were married.

Walter returned to the front on 10th October 1917 and served until the war ended.

Eliza arrived in Australia before Walter arrived home and sent a letter to the Army asking about his arrival date.

He was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged on 9th July 1919.

Eliza and Walter often travelled to England with their 2 children.

Both Walter and Eliza died in England, Walter in March 1959.

Walter's name is commemorated at the Woodward Memorial Park, Thirroul.
