Cornelius Strachan (Service No 9979) was born in Thirroul, N.S.W. around 1898.

When Cornelius enlisted at the age of 18 he was single, lived at Austinmer N.S.W. and was employed as a miner.  He had served for 4 years with 37th infantry.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A31 Ajana with 9th Field Company Engineers on 5th July 1916.  He arrived in England on 31st August 1916 and joined the engineers in France on 23rd November 1916.

Cornelius was admitted to hospital in France the next day sick, but joined his unit a few days later, on 29th November 1916.  On 4th April 1918 was again sent to hospital sick for 2 days.

On 22nd August 1918 he was wounded in action but remained on duty.

Cornelius was returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 23rd November 1919.

In 1922 he married Dora Morgan at St Leonards, N.S.W.

Cornelius' service is commemorated on the Austinmer War Memorial.
