Charles Jones (Service No 4161) was born in Neath, Wales but settled in Australia. At the time of enlistment he was a single 30 year old miner from Austinmer. He named his mother in Wales as next of kin.

He embarked on HMAT A15 Star of England with 10th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 8th March 1916. After training in England he joined 45th Battalion in France on 14th October 1916 where he saw service on the Western Front. Charles was wounded in action at Messines on 7th June 1917 and was evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wound to his left leg. Due to the seriousness of this wound he was returned to Australia in October 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 2nd July 1918.

On 11th June 1919 he re-enlisted for Special Service, and Private Charles Jones (Service No 85931) embarked on 9th July 1919 as escort for repatriated Germans on a special transport. He arrived back in England but was listed AWOL before he returned to Australia in December 1919. Charles was discharged on 11th May 1920 and nothing more is known about him.
