William Thompson (Service No 3503) was born in Sydney and at the time of enlistment he was a single 22 year old stockman from Wollongong. He embarked on HMAT A68 Anchises with 9th Reinforcements, 53rd Battalion on 24th January 1917. William arrived in England on 27th March 1917 and was sent on France on 17th May 1917. On 7th September 1917 he joined 1st Mobile Veterinary Section in France.

He saw service on the Western Front caring for animals injured by the fighting. On 19th September 1918 he was promoted to Corporal and then on 1st October 1918 to Sergeant. He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on 10th October 1919.

William married Jean Rutledge and they raised their family in Queensland. He died there in 1988 aged 94.
