John Herbert (Service No 3318) was born in WestKnow, England about 1887. When he enlisted he was a widowed 30 year old carman and horsebreaker. It is unknown when he came to Australia and whether his wife died before or after he arrived in Australia. There is no record of any children.
John had tried to enlist from where he was living in Thirroul, NSW in April, but was rejected for having bad teeth. He was successful in Sydney soon after.
John embarked on HMAT A28 Miltiades with B Company, 35th Battalion on 2nd August, 1917. John arrived in England on 2nd October, 1917 and was given leave to visit his parents in Carlisle before he went to France on 8th February, 1918.
Johm was in the first line of trenches on 5th April, 1918 when he was shot and killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Betonneaux.
