Details:

Harry Jones (Service No 1138) was born in Wigan, England around 1891.  Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Harry emigrated to Australia.

When he enlisted at Blackboy Camp, Western Australia, at the age of 23, Harry was single, and worked as a miner.  Harry nominated his brother, Richard, who lived at Clifton, N.S.W. as his next of kin.  Harry's address at enrolment is also recorded as Clifton, N.S.W. on his embarkation roll.

Harry embarked Melbourne on HMAT A32 Themistocles with 1st Reinforcements, 11th Battalion on 22nd December 1914.  He arrived in Egypt and after further training was assigned to C Company.  He left Egypt and went on to more training on Lemnos.

Harry was part of the first wave to land (at 4:30 am) and scale the cliffs.  These troops managed to get further inland that day than at any time during the whole campaign.

On 8th August 1915, Harry was wounded in action and evacuated to Egypt for treatment of a bomb wound to his hand.  He finally rejoined his unit in Egypt on 7th January 1916.

On 1st February 1916 Harry was promoted to Lance Corporal and went on to France arriving on 5th April 1916.  He was further promoted to Corporal on 18th June 1916.

On 20th July 1916 at the battle for Pozieres, Harry was killed in action.  His papers have no further details about his death, and there is no known grave.

Harry is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.
