Details:

Frederick Kemp (Service No 2405) was born in Ryde, N.S.W. around 1891.

Frederick enlisted when he was 24 years old; he was single, worked as a labourer, and lived at Bellambi, N.S.W.

Frederick embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A32 Themistocles with 5th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion, on 5th October 1915.  He arrived in Egypt on 5th February 1916 and went to France with 6 Platoon, B Company, 17th Battalion on 23rd March 1916.

On 20th May 1916 Frederick was wounded, however the wound was slight and he remained on duty.  Not long after, on 26th July, he was again wounded, this time more seriously, and on 28th July Frederick was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his legs and back.  Frederick rejoined his unit on 28th March 1917.

On 19th April Frederick was promoted to Lance Corporal.

On 3rd May 1917, while taking part in the battle for Bullecourt, Frederick was scouting in no-mans-land with his fellow soldiers.  At some time during the attack, the soldiers came under heavy fire.  Shortly after, Frederick's fellow soldiers realised he was not with them.  Searches were carried out by the Army, to ascertain if Frederick had been taken prisoner, but no trace could be found of him, and he was never seen again.

Frederick is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, at Corrimal Memorial Park, and on the Corrimal Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
