Joseph Hilton (Service No 1014) was born at Mount Keira, N.S.W. around 1888.

On 16th April 1910 Joseph married Mabel Powell at Parramatta, N.S.W.  However, when Joseph enlisted at the age of 27, he claimed to be single; at this time he was living at Lithgow, N.S.W. and named his mother as next of kin.

Joseph embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A72 Beltana with D Company, 30th Battalion, on 9th November 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt on 11th December 1915, and on 15th February 1916 Joseph was transferred to 3rd Battalion.

He arrived in France on 20th March 1916 but was killed in action soon after.

Joseph is buried in Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France: Plot I, Row E, Grave 29 Fleurbaix France.
