William Howden (Service No 9549) was born in Whitekirk, Scotland.

When William enlisted at the age of 30, he was living in Figtree, N.S.W. and single and working as a miner.

William embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A71 Nestor with the January 1918 Reinforcements, Tunnelling Companies, on 28th February 1918.  The troops arrived in England on 20th April 1918 and William was sent on to France on 15th September 1918. 

Soon after, on 29th September 1918, William was wounded, and evacuated to 9th General Hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his legs.  His left leg was amputated, but tragically William, died from his wounds on the day the war ended.

William is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen, France: Block S, Plot III, Row DD, Grave 20.
