George Canham (Service No 6717) was born in Sydney, N.S.W.  He married Ivy Cambrell in 1908.

Geoge was 28 years old, worked as a butcher, and lived in Kiama, N.S.W. when he enlisted.  George and Ivy had 3 children at this time.  George also had over 3 years past service with the 37th Infantry Militia.

George embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Port Nicholson with 22nd Reinforcements, 13th Battalion on 8th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 10th January 1917 and after further training George joined A Company in France on 7th May 1917.

On 3rd July 1917 George was wounded and admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance for treatment of gun shot wounds to his elbow and left side.  He was sent on to hospital in England on 15th July 1917.  His side wounds healed but the elbow wound resulted in his being returned to Australia in November 1917.

Arriving home he was further treated at Georges Heights and then discharged medically unfit on 4th March 1918.

George and Ivy went on to have 7 children and he died in 1973.
