Details:

Thomas Makin (Service No 1975) was born in Korumburra, Victoria.  Thomas  was single, 22 years old and working as a miner in Wollongong, N.S.W. when he enlisted.

He embarked on HMAT A20 Hororata with the 14th Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on 17th April 1915.  He arrived in Egypt on 20th May 1915 and was on Gallipoli on 9th July 1915.

Thomas was fighting at Suvla Bay when he was killed in action and has no known grave.

Due to the loss of 14th Battalion records Thomas had been listed as a deserter.  This was cleared up at an inquiry in 1920 when evidence was given by a number of men who stated they had seen him fall and that he had embarked for Gallipoli with them.  Finally some peace for his family when his medals were issued to them.

Thomas is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
