John Fletcher (Service No 5499) was born in Keiraville, N.S.W. around 1885, and attended Keiraville Public School.

In 1908 he married Annie Murray, and at the time of his enlistment they were living at Woonona, N.S.W. with their 2 children.  John was 31 years old and employed as a miner at the time.

John embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A71 Nestor with 17th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion, on 9th April 1916.

Arriving in Egypt on 7th August 1916 he was posted to B Company, 13th Battalion and the troops arrived in France on 19th August 1916.  Pozieres had been taken and the fight for Mouquet Farm was being fought.  John Fletcher was killed in action during the fighting on 29th August 1916.

He is buried in Courcelette British Cemetery, France; Plot XII, Row F, Grave 8.
