Ernest Henry Fisher
Ernest Fisher (Service No 5092) was born in Ballarat, Victoria and adopted by the Fisher family.
Ernest enlisted when he was living in Kiama, N.S.W. after the Waratah March came through the area. He was 21 year old, single, and working as a labourer. Ernest had served 3 years in the Militia.
He embarked from Sydney on board SS Makarini with 16th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, on 1st April 1916. After arriving in Egypt in May 1916, the unit left for France soon after, arriving in France on 18th June 1916. Ernest was fighting at the Somme, in the Pozieres sector when he was wounded on 22nd July. He was taken to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his arm, thigh and back, however Ernest's wounds were severe, and he died the next day.
Ernest is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France: Plot II, Row A, Grave 22.
