James Fairley (Service No 6735) was born in Glasgow, Scotland and came to Australia at an early age.  He attended Bowral High School in the N.S.W. Southern Highlands, and served 6 months in the Cadets.  A keen soldier, James enlisted on his 18th birthday at Kiama, N.S.W.  Previous to this he had been working as an orchardist.

James embarked from Sydney on board SS Port Nicholson with 22nd Reinforcements, 13th Battalion on 8th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 10th January 1917 and James was quickly sent on to France, joining 10 Platoon, C Company on 17th March 1917.  James was in the fighting at Bullecourt where he was killed by a shell on 11th April 1917.

There is no known grave for James; he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux.
