George Gribbon (Service No 2728) was born in Manchester England and at the time of enlistment he was a 20 year old labourer from Woonona. He embarked on HMAT A54 Runic with 7th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 9th August 1915 and served at Gallipoli. George was evacuated to hospital from there on 15th December 1915, no further information provided.

On 13th February 1916 he was transferred to 55th Battalion and joined 13 Platoon, C Company. The battalion went to France and was at the battle for Fromelle. On the night of 19/20 July 1916 George was wounded and taken prisoner. He was treated in hospital by the Germans for a bullet wound to his left shoulder. George was in a P O W camp in Stuttgart Germany for over two years. He was repatriated to England on 19th December 1918 and returned to Australia in April 1919. George was discharged on 24th July 1919 and died in Sydney in 1951.
