Hollis Dawes (Service No 4499) was born in Albion Park, NSW about 1892 and was a single 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted. He embarked on RMS Osterey with 14th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 15th January 1916.

He arrived in France on 6th March 1916 having been transferred to 45th battalion. On 10th October 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and on 3rd March 1917 promoted to Corporal.
On 11th April 1917 15th Platoon, D Company, 45th Battalion were fighting at Bullecourt. Hollis Dawes was fighting in the sunken road at about 5pm when a shell hit and he was killed.

Hollis is buried in Vraucourt Copse Cemetery Plot III, Row B, Grave 4. His brother Walter Dawes (Service No 2167) served and returned to Australia.
