Ernest Penly was born in Wollongong about 1892. At the time of enlistment he was a single 24 year old warehouseman. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 13th Battalion, 21st Reinforcements on 7th October 1916.

After brief training in England Ernest arrived in France on 12th February 1917. He was posted to 1 Platoon A Company as a machine gunner. Ernest was at the battle for Messines Ridge where the 13th Battalion had been relieved and were making their way back to the rear. At about 9pm he was near a place called Gooseberry Farm when a shell hit and he, along with others, were killed.

Ernest is buried in Kandahar Farm Cemetery PlotII, Row B, Grave 30.
