Alfred Ostrom was born at Lake Illawarra about 1893. He moved with his family to Tweed Heads and was working as a fisherman at the time of enlistment in Queensland. Alfred was 23 and single.

He embarked on HMAT A49 Seang Choon on 19th September 1916 with the 52nd Battalion, 5th Reinforcements. On arrival in England on 19th December 1916 he was admitted to hospital with a cold but was moved to another hospital on 12th January 1917 with mumps.

Alfred did not see active service because he was again returned to hospital sick on 16th February 1917 and died soon after from Tubercule of the Lung. He is buried at St John Church Cemetery Plot 282, Row C, Grave 7. Sutton Veney.

His brother Thomas Ostrom (Service No 3864) also served.
