James Philpot (Service No1084) was born in Corrimal, NSW and at the time of enlistment was a single 19 year old analytical chemist. He had spent 3 years in the junior cadets and 2 years in the senior cadets including 6 months in the Coronation Contingent. James also spent a year as a Lieutenant in the senior cadets.

As a result of this service he embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides on 20th October 1914 as a Sergeant with F Company, 3rd Battalion. After disembarking in Egypt, James landed on Gallipoli on 25th April and saw service till evacuated, due to illness, on 27th July 1915. He returned to Gallipoli on 3rd August and took part in the Lone Pine battles. James was wounded in action receiving a bomb wound to his ankle and thigh and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment. He returned to Gallipoli for a third time arriving on 3rd December 1915.

After the evacuation, back in Egypt he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 22nd March 1916. James went to France with the battalion and saw service on the Western Front till he was wounded in action a second time. He received a serious gun shot wound to his arm and was evacuated to hospital for treatment but died of these wounds on 25th July 1916.

He is buried in Warloy-Baillon Cemetery Plot I, Row D, Grave 11.
