Archibald Fowless (Service No 2374) was born in Inverell, NSW about 1895.He came to the Illawarra with his family when his father was made Headmaster of Clifton Public School. At the time of enlistment he was a single 20 year old teacher also working at Clifton Public School.

He embarked on H M A T A 9 Shropshire with 7th Reinforcements, 13th battalion on 20th August 1915. Archibald served at Gallipoli from 23rd October 1915 till the evacuation. After returning to Egypt he was admitted to hospital ill on 24th January 1916. He recovered and went to France with 2 Platoon, A Company, 13th battalion and saw service on the Western Front with them as a lewis gunner. On 29th August 1916 he was wounded but no further information is recorded.

On the 11th April 1917 Archibald was in action near Reincourt at the battle for Bullecourt when he was hit by machine gun fire and killed. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux.

His brother Lieutenant A Fowless also served and returned to Australia.
