Hugh Francis Roose (Service No 4822) was born in Orange, NSW in 1895. He spent 2 years in the cadets. The family moved to Corrimal and at the time of enlistment he was a single 20 year old insurance agent.

He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 12th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion on 13th April 1916 and arrived in France on 9th September 1916. On 9th October was transferred to 53rd Battalion.

Hugh became ill and was hospitalised on 21st October 1916 but returned to his unit on 3rd November 1916, in time to be in the trenches for the terrible winter of 16/17. He was evacuated to hospital with trench foot on 15th December 1916 and did not return to the front.

In March 1917 he was transferred to the depot, remaining there till he was returned to Australia in December 1918. He was discharged medically unfit due to Valvular Disease of the Heart on 5th June 1919.

In 1921 he married Isabella Dobing in Wollongong. Hugh died in Randwick in 1943. His brother John William Robert Roose (Service No 2457) was killed on the Western Front on 21 November, 1916.
