George Barnaby was born in Sydney about 1887. He was a single 27 year old clerk living in Helensburgh with his family. He enlisted in Perth and embarked on HMAT A2 Geelong with 1st Reinforcements, 28th Battalion on 5th June 1915.

He arrived at Gallipoli on 4th September 1915 as a member of B Company and saw service until he was evacuated to hospital in Malta on 10th October 1915. After the evacuation the battalion arrived in France on 21st March 1916. While engaged in the Somme Battles at Poziere he was wounded in action on 29th July 1916. He was taken to 1st Field Ambulance for treatment of gun shot wounds to his thigh, face and jaw. His injuries were severe and he died of his wounds on 4th August.

He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Plot 9, Row C, Grave 6a.
