Gordon James (Service No 7839) was born in Wollongong, NSW about 1895. He was a single 22 year old electrician who had spent 4 years with the CMF Engineers when he enlisted. He had worked for the Metropolitan Water Board for 5 years.

He embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor on 21st November 1917 with Tunnelling Company Reinforcements. Gordon was promoted to Sergeant on 23rd December 1917 and saw service on the Western Front arriving in France on 1st August 1918. He was not wounded but in January 1919 he contracted influenza and spent time in hospital for treatment. He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged on 28th November 1919.

In 1921 Gordon married Edith Kennedy at Burwood. He is remembered on the Wollongong Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.
