Wilfred Denniss was born in Robertson, NSW about 1893 and at the time of enlistment was a single 23 year old farmer at Dapto.

He embarked on SS Port Napier with 22nd Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion on 8th November 1916. After training in England he proceeded to France as a Lewis Gunner in 1 Platoon, A Company, 2nd Battalion. Wilfred saw service on the Western Front and while engaged in action at the battle for Passchendaele he was struck by a snipers bullet to his groin. He was placed on a stretcher and evacuated for treatment but died on the way.

Wilfred has no known grave but is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium. His brother Stanley (Service No 5077) also served.
