Garfield Humphreys (Serial No 1936) was born in Wollongong, NSW and at the time of enlistment he was a single 29 year old accountant. He embarked on HMAT A69 Warialda with 3rd Reinforcements, 45th Battalion on 22nd May 1916. After arriving in England he was sent to France, arriving on 1st October 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st December 1916.

On 22nd November 1916 he was admitted to hospital (sick not wounded). After recovering he returned to his unit and saw service on the Western Front. On 28th August 1917 he was promoted to Corporal.

On 5th August 1918 he transferred to the Army Postal Corps and returned to Australia in August 1919. Garfield was discharged on 5th October 1919 and in 1922 he married Ethel Murrell. He died in June, 1964.

Garfield had two brothers who also served, Harry (Service No 2858) was killed in the battle for Poziere and Robert (Service No 591) was killed during an air raid at Strazeele, Belguim.
