Private Patrick Rodgers (Service no. 5214) was born in Figtree circa 1892 and attended the Unanderra Public School. He was part of the enlistment drive of the Waratah March. At the time he was a single 23 year old labourer. He embarked on SS Makarini on 1st April, 1916 with 16th Reinforcements 1st Battalion. While still in training on 20th September he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He saw service on the Western Front.

On 6th November, 1917 he was gassed and was admitted to hospital for treatment. He returned to his unit and was wounded a second time on 30th September, 1918 with a gun shot wound to his left hand. He returned to Australia in early 1920 and was discharged from the AIF on 7th April, 1920.

In 1920 he married Daisy Vass and they had four children. Patrick Rodgers is remembered on the Unanderra School Roll of Honour.
