In March 1916, Arthur embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, for Marseilles, where he disembarked on 28 March 1916.

Arthur served on the Western Front, fighting in France and Belgium.
On 19th October 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, and on 10th March 1917 again prompted to Corporal. Soon after, on 9 April, he was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to his left thigh. Arthur was evacuated to England for treatment. He recovered and rejoined his unit.

In between fighting he was granted Leave, spending time in London and Paris in February 1918. By this time Arthur had received a promotion to Sergeant.

Arthur rejoined the 3rd Battalion, from Leave, on 22nd June, 1918, but unfortunately he was wounded only a few days after rejoining the fighting. Arthur sustained multiple gun shot wounds and was evacuated for treatment but at the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station he died on
27th June, 1918.

Arthur is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) at Souvenier Cemetrey. Plot 5, Row C, Grave 8.
