John Gorrell (Service No 3538) was a 19 year old bank officer when he enlisted in the AIF. His address was 'Sunny Vale', Unanderra, N.S.W., was single, and had spent 2 years with the 28th Light Horse.

While given the Rank of Private on enlistment, on 12 April, 1917 he was designated 'Trooper'.

He embarked from Melbourne, on HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 2nd November, 1917, with the 1st Light Horse Regiment, 31st Reinforcement. 

John served in Egypt and, while not wounded, spent time in hospital for various illness.

In February 1919 he was returned to Australia due to Malaria and discharged from the AIF.

On 5th April, 1924 he married Marjory McCoy.
