Lance Corporal Charles Dines (Service no. 74) was born in Boggabri circa 1895. At the time of enlistment he was a 21 year old carpenter living in Unanderra.

Charles embarked on HMAT A 72 Beltana on May 15, 1916 with A coy 36th Battalion. Enroute to Europe he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery on the ship. He recovered and saw service on the Western Front, and on May 30, 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Not long after this he was admitted to hospital as the cancer returned. He died on April 4, 1918 in hospital.

Charles was buried with full military honors attended by the Staff Band, a firing party and gun carriage, while the Last Post was played. This information was sent to his family in Unanderra. He is buried in a single grave in the Parish Churchyard, Harefield.
