Private Louis Meurant (Service no. 57) was born on 12th November, 1890 and was the first of the Meurant boys to enlist. He embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses with 13th Battalion on 22nd December, 1914.

After training in Egypt he sailed for Gallipoli and landed on the first day. Just a couple of weeks later on 4th May, 1915 Louis was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment to a shrapnell wound to his eye. On the 8th October, 1915 he lost his eye and was returned to Australia and discharged medically unfit on 16th May, 1916.

In 1921 he married Doris Evelyn Kent in Wollongong.
