James Vaughan (Service No 3137) was born in Mount Kembla, NSW.  He was 24 years of age, and working as a baker when he enlisted on 24 February, 1916.

While stating his marital status as single on the day he enlisted, James married Veronica Mary Creef, before embarking overseas; James' enlistment papers were amended to show that his nominated next of kin, was his wife, Veronica Mary Vaughan.

The young couple were able to spend some time together as James did not leave for the war till 1917.

James was assigned to the 1st Light Horse Regiment, and he embarked with his Unit on HMAT A42 Boorara on 10th May, 1917.

James saw service in the Middle East. He was wounded in action on 12th November, 1917, receiving a gun shot wound to his left thigh.  James was wounded a 2nd time in May 1918 with a wound to his left arm.

He returned to Australia in March 1919, and was discharged, medically unfit, on 24th May, 1919.

James died at Concord Repatriation Hospital, Sydney, on 5 February, 1956, aged 64.
