Private David Grainger (Service no: 2645) was born in Fife, Scotland about 1873. He travelled to Australia and was working as a miner at Mount Kembla before enlisting in the AIF at the age of 43 years.

He embarked with 45th Battalion on HMAT A40 Ceramic on 7th October, 1916. He saw service on the Western Front and returned to Australia in March 1918. He was discharged medically unfit on 24th April, 1918.

David Grainger was a keen soldier and not happy about being discharged as he tried to re-enlist unsuccessfully in the AIF at Mount Kembla before his discharge came through. He had also previously served in the Imperial Yeomanry.
