Trooper William Gallagher (Service no. 1712) was born in Corrimal, N.S.W. around 1891 and later worked as a miner.

He embarked with 8th Reinforcements, 12th Light Horse Regiment on HMAT A10 Karroo on 5th May, 1916. After he arrived in Egypt he contracted Diphtheria and spent a lot of time in hospital. The climate and conditions were not good for his recovery. However he was returned to his unit from hospital on 9th August, 1917 and was present with his squadron for the Charge of Beersheba. An Illawarra boy present for the last big cavalry charge in history.

After several more hospital admissions he was back to the Light Horse Regiment in Jerusalem on 5th June, 1918.

He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 28th August, 1919.

In 1919 he married Violet Simmons at Canterbury and they had 2 children. She died in 1929 and in 1935 he married a second time to Myrtle Dricoll.
