Sverre Mathisen (Service No 50346) was born in Tonsberg, Norway.

Sverre enlistment at the age of 27, when he was single, working as a farm-hand and living at Figtree, N.S.W.

Sverre had enlisted in Wollongong, N.S.W. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 14th Light Horse Regiment on 10th June 1918.

Sverre arrived in Egypt on 17th July 1918, however his state of health caused a medical board to return him to Australia in January 1919 on board HT Berrima.

He was discharged from the AIF on 12th March 1919.

Sverre was not a naturalized Australian, and a release from the Norwegian Embassy was given allowing him to join the AIF -  this may be the reason there are no personnel records of Sverre's with the Australian War Memorial.

Hi, Sverre Mathisen was my grandfather, I was surprised and happy to see this article online.I never met him as I was adopted out at a very early age.
I think he was a very lucky man as he missed out on all the action in the first world war, but to his credit he joined up willing and ready to fight not for his country but for something he believed in.
Yours Paul O'Neill.

Thank  you for your feedback Paul.  It is very gratifying to know that you have learned more about your grandfather and his courageous actions.

Hi Paul and Wollongong Library
Narooma Historical Society is trying to find out more about Ole Mathisen who enlisted in WWI and is listed on the Narooma Honour Rolls.
He too was born in Tornsberg, Norway.
Could it be that Sverre and Ole were related? Ani information about what maybe brought Sverre/Ole to Australia and what happebned to them?
Regards
Laurelle Pacey
