Robert Pate was born in Mount Kembla, 1888, and was the son of Robert and Marion Pate. Prior to enlistment he was a miner. He enlisted in the A I F on 26th September, 1916. Service #2295, Private Pate embarked with the 46th Battalion on the SS Port Napier on 17th November, 1916, from Sydney to Devonport. He served on the Western Front. During June 1917, he transferred to the 4th Machine Gun Battalion, but later rejoined the 46th. He returned to Australia in June 1919. After the war he moved to Cessnock and in 1920 he married Doris Richardson. He died in Cessnock on the 23rd October, 1959.
