Stanley Johnston (Service No 611) was born in Buninyong, Victoria to son of James and Margaret Johnston.

He enlisted for the Boer War on the 6th of February, 1902, where he served as Private Johnston, Regimental No 1660, with the 3rd Battalion Commonwealth Horse for 7 months. He listed his civilian employment as a swimming instructor.

He was working as an auctioneer & living with his sister, Jean, at The Gunyah, Kembla Heights, when he enlisted in the AIF, on 16th March, 1915. He embarked on HMAT A29 Suevic on the 13th of June, 1915, at the age of 39.  

Trooper Johnston served at Gallipoli with D Squadron, 6th Light Horse.  In June 1915 he was promoted to Corporal and in July was promoted again to Sergeant.

After the evacuation he was posted to the 12th Light Horse in Egypt. On 10th June, 1916, he received an injury to his knee; it was this injury that ultimately led to his discharge. On 21st  May, 1917, he was again promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and on 22nd August his final promotion to Lieutenant occurred.

Stanly was returned to Australia in November 1917 and discharged, medically unfit, on 26th of January, 1918.

On 16th of July, 1921, he married Kathleen Norton and they raised a family.

Stanley died in Sydney on 21st of May, 1961.
