Charles Mayne (Service no 31187) was born in Sydney.  At the time of enlistment with his brother 31186 Jack Mayne (Service no 31186) Charles was single, 19 years of age, employed as a bank clerk, resided in Wollongong, NSW and had previously served 4 years with the Cadets and Militia.

Charles embarked on RMS Orontes with Divisional Ammunition Column 2, Reinforcement 12 on 19 December 1916 and he and Jack arrived in England on 17 February 1917.  Charles joined the 2nd Division Ammunition Column in France on 12 September 1917.  On 3 October 1917, Charles suffered a hand injury in an accident that was to cause him further problems for the rest of his military service.

On 1 February 1918 Charles was promoted to Corporal. 

Charles returned to Australia in January 1919 and was medically discharged on 23 April 1919.

In 1933 he married Jessie McRae and together they raised 2 children.

Charles (NX28434) enlisted for service in World War 2 on 27 May 1940 and served with the 2nd Eschelon until 11 December 1943. 

He returned to his home in Queanbeyan, NSW on discharge.  Charles drowned while trying to rescue 2 boys.
