Walter Noakes (Service No 4494) was born in Sydney around 1896.

Walter was living at Bombo, N.S.W. when he enlisted in neighbouring Kiama; he was  single, 21 years old & worked as a labourer.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A71 Nestor with 20th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 9th April 1916, having completed training at the Signal School in February 1916.  Walter arrived in France on 19th November 1916 where he joined 20th Battalion.

On 23rd December 1916 he was admitted to hospital sick and evacuated to England after being diagnosed with tachycardia.  He remained in England and served there until repatriated to Australia in December 1918.

Walter was discharged, medically unfit, due to his heart disease on 18th May 1919.

He died in 1923 and is buried in Liverpool Cemetery.
