Henry Thomas Chaffey (Service No 603), was born in Essex, England and came to Australia in late 1912.

He had served with the Royal Navy from 9th July 1903 until 9th November 1907.

At enlistment, Henry was 27 years old, single, worked as a labourer and lived in Kiama, N.S.W. He embarked on HMAT A23 Suffolk with the 2nd Battalion, F Company, on 18th October 1914, as part of the first contingent. Henry disembarked in Egypt in December 1914, and landed at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25th April 1914.

On 4th May 1915, he was wounded in action and evacuated to England for treatment of a serious gun shot wound to his left leg and side. Henry finally caught up with his unit in France, on 11th August 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 26th October 1916.

On 4th May 1917, Henry was wounded a second time and treated for shrapnel wounds to his legs. He was wounded a third time on 14th October 1917, and was again evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of gun shot wounds to his left leg and right thigh. Henry returned to duty in France on 12th March 1918, and was promoted to Corporal on 30th August 1918.

In October 1918, Henry returned to Australia for Special 1914 Leave. He was discharged on 24th February 1919.

On 22nd October 1919, Henry married Florence Brown in Goulburn, N.S.W. The couple settled in Bargo, N.S.W., and raised 4 children.

Henry died suddenly at home in 1941, and is buried in Bargo Cemetery, Bargo, N.S.W.
