Details: 

James Carthew (Service No 5549) was born in Kiama.  He married Florence Bogus in Kiama in 1903 and the couple had 3 children.

At enlistment James was 38 years old, a farm labourer and had served 18 months with the Militia.

James embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with 19th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 9th September 1916. He arrived in England on 26th October 1916 and joined 19th Battalion in France on 18th December 1916.

James saw service on the Western Front until admitted to hospital on 4th May 1917. Unfit for further active service he was repatriated to Australia in October 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 26th December 1917 due to debility and age.

James was an active member of the RSL and played the piano accordian at various functions for them.

He died in Kiama Hospital in 1944; his service is commemorated on the Kiama Memorial Arch & Honour Roll.
