Richard Percy Byrnes (Service No 38326) was born in Unanderra, N.S.W.

At enlistment in Wollongong, N.S.W., he was 22 years old, single and worked as a teacher. Richard embarked on SS Canberra, with the 32nd Field Artillery Reinforcement on16th November 1917. He arrived in England on 30th January 1918 and joined the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column in France, on 9th July 1918. Richard saw service on the Western Front without any wounding being recorded. He was granted leave in England to attend Sheffield University and returned to Australia in September 1919. Richard was discharged medically unfit on 8th January 1920.

Later that year Richard married Elsie Jarrett. He continued to teach, eventually becoming a principal.

Richard died in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1979.

Richard's brother Norbert Joseph Byrnes (Service No 2966), also served.
